Inspired by black-and-white photographs of women in bathing suits from the 1950s, Side by Side considers the vulnerability of being seen and exposed. Influenced by the figurative work of David Park and Richard Diebenkorn, the painting uses loose brushwork and simplified forms to capture gesture, expression, and the quiet tension between the two figures.
