Something to Hold

Part of the Modern Loneliness series, Something to Hold draws from the intimacy and psychological weight of Old Master portraiture while placing the figure firmly in the present. A cigarette becomes a small object of comfort, something to hold, a ritual to occupy the hands, and a temporary answer to an otherwise unfilled space. Her gaze remains elsewhere, allowing the loneliness to sit quietly beneath the surface. The painting considers the small habits and distractions we reach for when faced with the discomfort of simply being alone. Material: oil on canvas
